Happy New Year everyone! I hope you have an amazing year. I think 2024 is going to be the year for everyone. I’m feeling positive.
Today I want to talk to you about new year resolutions and see what you think. Do you agree with me that they can be good or bad for you? I’m going to share my personal experience and why I don’t do them anymore.
I remember when I was a teenager and I went back to college after the Christmas break. Everyone was talking about their resolutions and I felt very uneasy. I didn’t make any and I felt like I had to come up with something just to fit in with the group.
I would usually say something like “get healthier” or set some ridiculous challenge that I knew I would never complete. Then I would feel bad and go into a depressed mood. At that time, I didn’t have any tools to help me get out of that situation, so I would end up feeling worse.
Fast forward to 2018 and I had my psychotic breakdown. About 2-6 months later, I came across the recovery college under the mental health team. I did a few courses and got along really well with them. Then I took the goal setting course and it changed my perspective on new year resolutions. It even helped me find some positive aspects.
The course was only 3 sessions long, but I learned not to set unrealistic resolutions and not to set them too big.
I now set myself some small goals throughout the year and some of them are very small, but this works for me.
So the question for you is: should you set resolutions and not feel bad about them when you can’t do them, or set small achievable ones and feel good about them?
Thank you for reading this blog.
I wish you all a happy new year and good mental health.
